Save The Oceans

As windsurfers, we play in and on the water. As water men and women we should appreciate the value of this resource more than the regular public and do our part to educating ourselves about ocean issues and do our part.

There are many issues affecting the health of Earth’s oceans. Some of the most serious threats include:

  • Pollution
  • Overfishing
  • Effects from climate change such as ocean acidification

We’re putting hundreds of millions of tons of trash into the ocean. Much of that is plastic from plastic water bottles and grocery bags. It doesn’t take much of an effort to keep our personal trash out of the ocean. Learn more about how you can help clean up your ocean playground with simple steps like reducing the plastic water bottles you use by replacing them with reusable water bottles.

Overfishing is threatening species and changing ecosystems. In the last several decades, we’ve taken more than 90% of the big fish from the ocean already. Whole fisheries such as the cod fisheries of the Grand Banks in the North Atlantic have nearly collapsed. Learn how you can choose more sustainable fish to eat thereby reducing your impact on overfishing.

Climage Change/Ocean Acidification

As a direct result of increasing CO2 levels in our atmospshere, the oceans are becoming more acidic. The ocean naturally absorbs CO2. As more CO2 gets absorbed, we get carbonic acid, a weak acid that affects the pH level and dissolves the calcium carbonates needed for corals and other seashell forming organisms. Learn more about ocean acidification.
