Makani's Favorite Maui Restaurants

Jacque’s – Paia

Not only does Jacques serve up some great food at very reasonable prices, but he’s a windsurfer and a regular at Kanaha as well. If you like sushi, check out the sushi bar in the back. Otherwise you’ll find a nice selection of entrees including seafood, pastas, beef, chicken or veggie. And, they have Black Butte Porter on tap! Note (Dec 28, 2009): I just heard this morning that Jacque’s has closed. Haven’t been to Paia to confirm or deny this though.

Paia Fish Market – Paia

It’s a Maui windsurfing tradition. You have to eat at the fish market. Best fish tacos outside of Baja. Dining is a bit informal and the place is often standing room only, but a helluva lot of good food at a great price.

Mambo Cafe – Paia

Further up Baldwin Avenue in Paia you’ll find this eclectic little cafe with the always interesting artwork of Ray Master decorating the walls. If you’re looking for something a little different, try Mambo. They’ve got some very interesting and tasty grinds – like duck fajitas. Mmmmm!

Casanova’s – Makawao

Upcountry in Makawao town you get away from the tourist hub bub a bit. If you’re looking for Italian, this is the place to go (visitors from Italy might not call this true Italian, but it’s good nonetheless). They’ve got some great pasta dishes and they’ve got their own wood fired oven cooking up great pizzas and calzones.

Gerard’s – Lahaina

I’ve heard about this for years, but only tried it recently. Fantastic French cuisine and prices are as outrageous as you might think.

Tommy Bahamas – Wailea

Though this place is a bit on the pricey side, it makes my list just for the key lime pie alone. The crab bisque is also pretty amazing.

Fish and Game Brewpub – Napili

Maui’s only brew pub. If you like fine, handcrafted microbrews – and I certainly do – you should give this a try. You gotta drive all the way over to the west side through the Lahaina traffic jam, but if it’s a no wind day or you’re staying on the west side, give it a try.

Also Try – I’ve always had a good meal at these as well …

Milagro’s – Paia – Interesting twist on latin cuisine.

Moana Cafe – Paia – Small on variety but always tasty. Great pastries.

Colleen’s – Haiku – If you can find it, they have some awesome food at great prices.

Big Bucks – Got money to burn? Try these.

Mama’s Fish House

Pizza – I love pizza, so it gets a section all for itself. I’m a bit if a pizza snob. Here’s the few on Maui I like:

Gianotto’s – Wailuku

Pizza Fresh – Makawao

Casanova’s – Makawao

Matteo’s – Wailea

Colleen’s – Haiku
