The 2012 Maui Makani Classic kicked off yesterday morning with opening ceremonies at Hookipa. The event kicked off with a traditional Hawaiian blessing and ceremony followed by head judge Matt Pritchard briefing the competitors on what to expect. Matt then released the competitors for the day due to flat conditions and light wind. Get the full report on Day 1 here.
A skippers meeting this morning at 10:00 am will determine if competition will kick off today. We’re expecting a new north swell to start rolling in some time today but trade winds are still pretty light. Winds are forecast to build tomorrow and through the weekend. The swell is also forecast to build to a fairly large swell (high surf advisory with waves 10 – 15 feet), so it will be interesting to see if it gets too big and closes out Hookipa forcing competition to wait until it drops down a bit, or if Matt will send out the pros to do battle in the big surf. My bet is that it will be pretty beefy but not close out and that Matt will send out the pros into the biggest part of this swell episode. Stay tuned to the AWT Livecast to find out.
