Kanaha Fun

Been some epic days at Uppers Kanaha last week. Even the most jaded and hard-to-please of us Uppers regulars have been heard using words such as epic to describe the sessions. Some people don’t like Uppers, but it’s days like these that keep us regulars coming back. Matt Pritchard caught some of it on video.

When I commented to Matt about how bad my turns on that wave were, he had some great advice:

…. it was a big wave, they always look smaller from atop my head- probably hard to turn that 92 with all that speed from the wave! I think those quads, especially the larger ones need to be turned closer to the wave so you make more turns and get your speed up that way to make it through the sections. The long drawn out turns on the big quads is tough!!! Think less turn, more squirm!~

Less turn, more squirm! That’s been my mantra since and I think it has definitely helped.

After about Tuesday, the winds on Maui started getting progressively lighter and the last few days have been about as light as it gets. Trade winds have disappeared completely and we have a light southerly flow instead. So, probably no windsurfing on Maui for the next week or so, but the Wind Guru model is starting to show hope for trade winds returning to Maui late next week.

Check this out. The first windsurfing video I ever bought, the full version of the epic windsurfing movie “RIP,” produced and narrated by Robby Naish, previously only available on VHS, is now available on YouTube. RIP is shot completely on Oahu and Maui. Great action and a great soundtrack.
