August So Far

Still not quite a typical summer here on Maui, but the wind has been blowing enough somewhere every day to satisfy all the wind junkies out there. Some excerpts from my session logs from this week:

Saturday

Another postcard perfect Maui weather day. Swung by Hookipa first to check out the conditions. Super light and tiny surf. Next stopped off at Sugar Cove and Sprecks. Pretty light there too. On to Kanaha. Looked like perfect 5.3. Got up to Uppers and Camp One. Best surf on the north shore from was at Camp One today with waist- to chest-high wind swell rolling in for some backside riding with an occasional down the line hit. Wind steadily ramped up throughout the day. Downsized to 5.0 for the second session. If I had done a third session it would  have been 4.5 or 4.2.

Friday

Got lucky with timing my session today. 12 till 2 was some pretty nice low 20s sailing – 5. 3 just about perfect – could have used just a tad more. Spectacular sunny day on Maui’s north shore until it started clouding up around 3pm. Really nice mellow bump n jump cruising. Some small backside surf up at Uppers and Camp One. Wind majorly dropped around 2:30 or 3:00.

Thursday

Anemic northerly trade winds on Maui. Strange summer days continue. Never used my 5.3 so much in July and August and 5.7 would have been the better call. On a bright note, the northerly wind seems to be giving us a bit better surf set up on the north shore, with waist high stuff to play in. Super mellow though.

Wednesday

Heard lots of reports of bad conditions at Kanaha on Wednesday but heard a report that it was logo high at Hookipa.

Tuesday

Unfortunately I stopped by the beach midday before the wind had come up. Super light and onshore, but once I left, the wind came up nicely.

Monday

Strong winds and some decent wind swell on Maui’s north shore. 4.5 looked like it would be mellow when I rigged and it was just right for the first ten minutes. Wind started to steadily ramp up though and within 20 minutes I was getting totally spanked. Some nice wind swell at Uppers and Camp One, but way too overpowered to take advantage of that.
