Great news for Maui windsurfers who don’t want to worry about packing a lunch when planning a day at Kanaha. Aloha Grinds, a food wagon, has brought their mondo burritos, tacos and more to Kanaha.
In all the years I’ve been sailing Kanaha I’ve always thought a food wagon would perfect for all the hungry windsurfers there. But, it was my understanding that Maui had restrictions against it. But, according to Johnny O., proprietor of the new food wagon, he’s in a special process with the county and the park rangers are stoked to have him there.
I’d seen the food wagon parked in the Uppers parking lot at Kanaha for a few weeks, and last week I got an email from Johnny. I think he mistook me for one of the official Maui Race Series event coordinators (not surprising since they have virtually zero Internet presence – but more on that in a future post).

“My name is Johnny O. and I have a great tasting mango salsa, mondo burritos, tacos and mole burger food wagon, I offer every kind of drink and kavakava shotz or kavakava or “awa” mohitos. The beef is organic Ulupalakua, the pork is local, the chicken and fish too. All choices, comes with fresh veggies and my special homemade hot sauce. I am interested in being at your event on July 31st, and will give kokua to the event coordinators too. I am just starting out and hoping to be known for tasty grinds. “
The event he refers to on July 31 is the last race of the 2010 Maui Race Series, the Neil Pryde Hawaii State Championship. So racers, windsurfers, spectators, no need to worry about packing up a lunch for your day at Kanaha. Johnny’s got you covered.
Johnny will be at the canoe races this morning but look for him at the Uppers parking lot at Kanaha other days.

As for the sailing report, July continues to be a bit odd for us this year. Aside from a few afternoons here and there where the wind has kicked in to it’s normal upper 20s strength, the trade winds continue to be unusually light for this time of year. It’s still been sailable every day on larger (for Maui) gear, or if you go to Kihei. Definitely not normal July conditions for us.
Looking down into the valley this morning from upcountry and the whole valley is hazy from cane fires. Winds are so far too weak to clear out the smoke.
