Not exactly a spectacular day for slalom racing, or any windsurfing for that matter, on Maui for the Maui Fin Company Open of the 2010 Maui Race Series. Gray skies and flukey winds dominated, trying the skill and patience of racers as well as the organizing committee. As I understand it, several heats were abandoned or canceled due to extremely light winds. Didn’t get many photos as a result of the flukey conditions, but here’s what I have.
It’s been another week of mixed conditions on Maui, ranging from cranking offshore winds to light and onshore. A few days of light wind by Maui standards and then BAM! Back on full force on Tuesday with periods of 30 knots – average. Pretty gusty and punchy wind. Kind of on the brutal side actually. Really bumpy ride most places except a few areas of smooth rollers rolling in outside of Camp One and in the break at Camp One. Typical summer wind swell direction – better suited to backside riding than down the line riding. Nearly a carbon copy of Tuesday’s conditions on Wednesday. A bit less bumpy on Thursday but still plenty windy. Friday brought light onshore conditions and 5.3 was barely enough to make it to Uppers and Camp One where there were some tiny, irregular northerly swells rolling and breaking. Pretty gutless, but hey, July in Maui we’ll take it. Also some more NE wind swell rolling in too – good for ramps.

Thanks David. No problem at all. Thanks for the link. Aloha!
Aloha,
My buddy has been in Maui for a few weeks and has been a bit discouraged by these conditions also…but knowing him he’ll stay on the island until he gets what he so desperately wants.
I am thinking about heading down myself and learning how to windsurf – I have 4 weeks off…can’t think of anything more glorious to do…
Hope conditions improve for you guys.
Cheers,
Max
