Comparatively Mellow Maui

After the insanely ballistic conditions we saw here on Maui earlier this week , the conditions over the last couple of days have been relatively mellow. Most people wouldn’t consider 20 – 25 knots mellow, but this is Maui.

After several days of nuking winds, Friday morning was a welcome relief with relatively mild wind blowing about 25 knots for the Maui morning session. 4.5 was just the right size. Plenty of power to get up to Camp One and play in the wind swell-generated waves. Some relatively smooth waist to chest high surf up there. Mostly favoring backside riding, but still able to get a down the line turn in, then go backside then down the line again… Pretty fun.

After a short lunch session, went back out on 4.5. Nice again for a couple of reaches then the wind picked up another notch or two and the 4.5 was half a meter too big. Didn’t last long on that and even though it was another gorgeous sunny day on Maui, just couldn’t muster the energy to rig down. Still got wind into the weekend and all next week. No sense in sailing to exhaustion when you’ve got wind every day for probably another couple of months.

Yesterday morning was almost  a carbon copy of Friday morning, maybe a tad gustier and the wind swell breaking at Camp One was a bit smaller and not quite as clean. Still some fun turns to be had and some nice ramps too. Wind picked up for the afternoon session so that the 4.5 was maxed out. Swell was a bit smaller too, so not quite as fun as the morning sesh.

Here’s a few shots from Kanaha yesterday.
