Setting Up for Summer

Maui is definitely transitioning into summer time mode with lots of sunny skies and teeny tiny surf on the north shore. Some really fun days the last couple of days despite the lack of surf.

Spectacular sunny day on Maui yesterday. After initially starting out pretty strong, the wind dropped down to about 19 mph and turned a bit onshore and then just stayed there all afternoon. Very consistent, very mellow – perfect conditions for freeride, just cruising, slalom or freestyle. Hardly any waves to speak except some tiny knee high stuff at Uppers and Camp One. Unless you’re a hard core wave snob, perfect conditions for 90% of the windsurfers in the world.

Today was a bit stronger and bit less onshore. Seemed like a perfect day to sail up to Sprecks and take advantage of the rolling open ocean swell outside the reef between Camp One and Sprecks. Fun session sailing up to Sprecks from Kanaha then back downwind again. Not much wave action except at Camp One, but the rolling open ocean swell outside the reef between Camp One and Sprecks makes for some fun swell rides coming down wind. One of the most fun summer time Maui north shore locations in my opinion. A lot like the Gorge but warmer water and without all the muck and pesticides. Shhh! Don’t tell anyone.

Another day of really mellow nice conditions for everyone but the wave riders. Perfect conditions for freeride cruising, slalom, or freestyle. Speaking of freestyle, here’s  a little peak at a new 2011 Gaastra IQ in freestyle action today. Dig how the board shorts pattern match the pattern on the foot of the sail.
