Maui on Mother’s Day

Still nuking on Maui but at least the wind was a bit more consistent today. Actually went out on 5.0 initially. Way too much. In for 4.5. Very powered up. Some nice rollers outside the break at Camp One and Uppers and some decent smooth, backside riding up at Camp One. The session got cut short though when I powered up the sail after a tweaked down the line hit and the wind hit the sail I heard a loud POP! Didn’t know what had happened but my sail was suddenly super baggy and the foot of the sail was scrunched up to the mast. Still planed in all the way to the launch and found that my downhaul pulley had broken. Second one that’s broken on my in the last 6 months. Ok, it was time to go down to 4.2 anyway.

So, I rigged up the 4.2 straightaway and headed right back out. Bit of a slog to the wind line then plenty powered. Pretty decent and consistent wind still and the most fun I’ve had in the water here in the last week or so.

After the 4.2 sesh I snapped a couple of photos of the slalom guys out blasting around.

Wind is forecast to drop off tomorrow for a couple of days, but personally I think they’re over predicting how much it will drop off. This time of year, the high pressure either has to be right on top of us or a shear line has to push the ridge away for the trade winds to totally go away. So, I’m going to go out on a limb and call for 15 – 20 knots tomorrow afternoon. As for waves – just wind swell and that will probably get smaller tomorrow. There is a small NW swell predicted to arrive late Tuesday and peak on Wednesday though.
