Sunny Slalom Saturday

Gorgeous sunny day on Maui yesterday. Blue skies, hardly any squalls to speak of, steady 20 knots. A great day to be out on the water. Not the greatest surf conditions – mostly some sloppy waist high stuff at Uppers. A lot of people think that Maui is just about wave sailing. But make no mistake, there is a very hard core contingent of slalom sailors here and they were out in force at Kanaha yesterday, already getting tuned up for the Maui Race Series this summer. Here’s a few shots of some of that.

Winds on Friday were a bit light and onshore so most windsurfing action on Friday took place in Kihei. 4.7 conditions for the lighter guys according to Mike B. and some 3 foot waves at Pavillions.

Thursday was a wild day on the north shore. 4.5 maxed out for me in my first session. Bumpy and gusty. Chunky and junky surf mostly. After half an hour the wind took a serious drop and turned offshore due to a squall offshore. Wind seriously kicked in later in the afternoon. Wound out on the 4.5 again. Matt Pritchard offered to let me try a new Tabou Da Curve 79. Super lively ride and much skatier than my 2007 model. A really fun ride if you like it fast and lively. Personally, I liked it lot. Still super bumpy, choppy and the surf was still chunky and junky but I heard that it smoothed out for that late, late afternoon session.

Today’s setting up to be similar to yesterday I think – maybe some better surf. We’ve got wind in the forecast for at least the next week and another very large swell coming in the Tuesday – Wednesday time frame.

Great photos of the 2010 T-6 Maui Sails, super clear focus. Good job Jeff! That sail is stable and fast,
