Trade Winds Finally Return

After weeks of being pummeled and battered by low pressure systems and cold fronts, Maui’s trade wind-producing high pressure finally got a chance to pull itself up off the matt yesterday and stumble into position to provide us with some light trade winds – true trade winds, not Konas, not post-frontal northerlies.

Granted the wind was still lighter than most of us prefer, but it was the best conditions we’ve seen in two months in my opinion. 5.7 and a mondo floaty board were the call for me and it was barely enough. Light enough that it was still tough for me to get upwind, but I was planing the whole time at least. North swell was providing some fun waves at both Lowers and Uppers and lots of people were out at both. Lots of smiles and stokage going around as people expressed relief about finally getting back on the water after such a long hiatus.

Might get another day of light trades today, but they should ramp up and get stronger starting on Sunday or Monday which will coincide with yet another monster NW swell. Winds look like they may hold into Wednesday or even Thursday before going light and variable again so we’ve got a few days to play hard.
