Maui Sailing Report

P1030164 300x225 Maui Sailing ReportThe quick report is that winds have still been super light on Maui this last week. Not much sailing going on.

The highlight of the week was yesterday when the latest cold front pushed past and the overall winds clocked around from the north bringing in some decent wind readings to Kihei for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Wind readings on the iWindsurf Kihei sensor were reporting averages in the low 20s between about noon and 2:00. My experience is that that sensor reads about 5 mph too high so reality was the the wind was probably in the upper teens – so probably 5.7 or maybe 5.3 for me. Not tempting enough for me.

On the north shore, the Kanaha sensor was reading about 17 or 18 almost dead onshore. Definitely too light to get me moving. Some folks could be seen on the cameras slogging around though.

Today I think we’re going to have similar conditions as yesterday, possibly even a little lighter. The high pressure to our north that produces the trade winds here isn’t very strong. On top of that, the ground is wet which will keep the island interior from warming up as much as it otherwise might, reducing Maui’s wind-boosting thermal effect. Sunday will probably be similar too and then what little wind we have goes away again next week as we move into another light wind and cold front pattern.

In the surf forecast, right now we’ve got some short period, moderate sized surf from the north. Could be fun if we had enough wind. Looks like another episode of large to extra large waves is setting up for next week.

    Aloha Jeff,

You are correct about Kihei. Thursday and Friday I sailed 5.0 and 75 liters. Thursday it had a lot of east in it so when we quit it was a short swim and a short walk pack to the launch. Friday was much better and I was somewhat over powered on the outside. You would have had to have been on a 5.7 for sure.

    Mike
