Wind is still in super light mode here on Maui. Gotta be the worst December in years as far as wind goes and it looks like more light wind days are on tap for at least the next week. So, with no sailing to report on, it’s time to put up the January 2010 Maui [...]

Yet more light wind days on Maui to report. Aside from a couple of days when it was sailable in Kihei earlier this week, winds have been incredibly light, even for December. I probably made  a mistake by not going to Kihei – I think it was Tuesday, but it looked so up and down, [...]

The quick report is that winds have still been super light on Maui this last week. Not much sailing going on.
The highlight of the week was yesterday when the latest cold front pushed past and the overall winds clocked around from the north bringing in some decent wind readings to Kihei for a couple of [...]

Got a couple of guest videos sent in by viewers today…
Winds are still light, too light to sail. Friday is still looking probable for a return of decent trades. Looks like maybe some small to medium surf then too.

December’s usually a light wind month on Maui and this year has been even lighter than normal. Finally got on the water for the first time this month yesterday afternoon – barely planing with a 5.7 a few times after a lot of pumping and bearing off. Still some fun-looking surf, but couldn’t really make [...]

Hard to say how big [...]

The big waves are here and dominating all aspects of life it seems. It’s headlining the papers and the local news. Jaws was the place to be yesterday – sounds like half the island was out there. Kevin Pritchard has an interesting perspective  of his day at Jaws yesterday. According to Maui Sails’ Phil McGain,

huge [...]

All the talk in Hawaii right now is on the impending extremely large surf event due to arrive tomorrow. The official forecast is calling for 50 foot faces on the outer reefs tomorrow though Tuesday. Though the forecast is calling for light trade winds to fill in Monday and Tuesday, I think they’re going to [...]

Granted that winter here on Maui is nothing like what most of you face. But there’s definitely a change in the seasons. Our reliable trade winds go away for extended periods and cold fronts swing down across the Hawaiian islands bringing rain and swinging winds around from varying directions.
We just had a cold front pass [...]

Couple of marginal light wind days the last couple of days here on Maui. Not enough wind to get me and the extra 10 pounds I put on over the past week up and planing so I didn’t get to the beach. Winds in the mid- and occasional upper-teens were enough to get some people [...]
