Another windy week on Maui with sailable wind every day this past week. Light, onshore conditions prevailed early in the week – 5.3 not being quite enough for me, but slalom sailors were loving the conditions. Monday was a bit gray and cloudy with onshore conditions still prevailing.
On Tuesday, the clouds that dominated Monday cleared and it was a beautiful sunny day to be on the water. Wind once again was pretty onshore, which isn’t very common this time of year on Maui. Conditions looked 5.0 from the beach but I rigged 5.3, taking the onshore conditions into account. Perfect call.
Mostly mellow cruising and slalom sailing going on. Powered up to Camp One. Some pretty tiny, mellow wind swell up at Camp One for a bit of backside riding. Better than absolute flat conditions, but pretty tame and mellow. Lots of slalom sailors out today tuning up for the upcoming race today.
Skipped sailing on Wednesday since it was a bit cloudy and squally. Thursday was bright and sunny once again though and the wind was a bit stronger and a bit less onshore than it had been this week. 5.0 was the perfect call. Powered up to Uppers and Camp One to play in the only bit of swell breaking at Kanaha. Pretty small stuff by Maui standards – waist to shoulder high, backside riding mostly due to the angle it breaks compared to the wind direction. Some good fun though.
Winds kicked it up a notch yesterday on Maui – seriously powered up 4.5 for me and at time pretty overpowered. Pretty brutal gusts. Wind clocked around to be a bit east and side-off. Despite a forecast for a bit of a northwest swell, it didn’t really hit Kanaha – NW swells usually don’t hit Kanaha well. So, more backside riding wind swell at Camp One – shoulder high.
Lots of slalom racers out tuning up for the today’s race. Should be equally windy but maybe a bit more challenging. Showers and squalls are in the forecast so that should make it pretty up and down and gusty.
