Maui Wind Is Back!

Despite predictions for continued light winds yesterday and today, Maui pulled off some magic and delivered us from our weeks-long wind famine the last two days. The trick I think was the clearing of the clouds allowing the island interior to get hot and baked and draw in a bit of an extra thermal boost to the overall light north pattern.
If you don’t mind the crowds, Hookipa was the place to be yesterday with logo-high waves and 5.0ish conditions. Kanaha, was a bit lighter but from what I hear, pretty nice conditions.
Swell was on the decline today and winds were looking marginally sailable. Headed down to Kanaha in the early afternoon to find really nice 5.7 freeride and slalom conditions. Wind was pretty consistent, skies were blue and sunny, surf was pretty fun-looking up at Camp One, pretty small at Uppers. The 5.7 was fairly powered up but not enough to get me all the way up to Camp One unfortunately. No complaints though. Just great to be out on the blue water cruising around, catching an occasional small wave at Uppers.
All forecasts are pointing to an even stronger return of trade winds after tomorrow. My hunch is that we’ll see similar conditions tomorrow as we had the last few days . Light by Maui standards, but definitely windy enough to get some windsurfing in. After that, it looks like trades will kick in to more normal levels for this time of year. So, all you folks who plan to be here this week on your windsurfing vacation that have been stressing out about our lack of wind, rest easy. You’re gonna get some.
