Maui Trade Winds Have Been Canceled

More bad windsurfing news from Maui. April closed out with more pathetically light winds and May has kicked off with the same. Overall weather is sunny and beautiful but the wind is virtually non-existant. Worst April I’ve personally seen for wind on Maui.
The long range forecast discussion this morning from the National Weather Service reported:
“THE RESULT WILL BE A CONTINUED WEAK RIDGE REMAINING ABOUT 400 MILES TO THE NORTH AND THEREFORE SOME QUESTION ABOUT WHETHER TRADE WINDS WILL BE ABLE TO STRENGTHEN ABOVE THE GENTLE 10 TO 15 MPH RANGE. MODELS SUGGEST SMALL STRENGTHENING OF TRADES BY THURSDAY.”
The light winds are all the more frustrating because we’ve been getting some surf on the north shore. And while winds look to continue to be light into next week, another swell is on the way. This from the Hawaiian Surf Forecast:
“Outlook through Thursday May 7: a larger northwest swell is expected to build late Sunday and Sunday night with heights near advisory levels Sunday night and Monday. This swell will then gradually lower into the middle of the week. No other significant swells are expected… Models of the north Pacific jet stream show an average spring pattern, thus at least small NW to N episodes spaced about 4 days apart are possible into the second week of may. Gentle breezes are expected late next week, keeping land and sea breezes.”
Upshot of all this is, is you surf or SUP there should be some fun to be had on the north shore. If you only windsurf… not so much.
