Finally got some decent wind yesterday after weeks of light or no wind. Funny thing is that the forecast for yesterday was originally calling for single digit wind speeds. With the vog clearing though, sunny skies had a chance to heat up the valley boosting the thermal effect and letting Maui work its magic. By shortly after 11:00 am, average wind speeds were over 20mph at Kanaha for the first time in nearly a month. Desperation beat out skepticism and I made a bee line for the beach. I was expecting the wind to drop or maybe be 5.3 conditions at best, but on arrival it looked like a solid 5.0. I debated between 5.0 and 5.3, finally opting for the 5.0.
It felt so good to get out on the water again. The 5.0 was about right a lot of the time, but 5.3 would have been fine too. Wind was a bit holey. Not much to speak of for waves. Lowers was almost completely flat. Some occasional chest-high waves at Uppers, but pretty sloppy. No complaints though. Just good to be out on the water powered up. I hear that lots of people were out at Hookipa earlier in the week doing the slog-n-surf on some nice waves, but since my back doesn’t tolerate slogging well, yesterday was the first real chance to sail in ages.
It’s tough to tell if we’ll get more of the same this weekend. Wind forecast is still pretty light, but all the same ingredients are in place today as yesterday so I’m optimistic about the sailing chances today and tomorrow. After that it looks like there’s a good chance the wind will drop off yet again. As for swell, there’s nothing significant on the north shore this weekend, so cruising, freestyle and bump and jump look like the featured items on the menu today.
Finally! Some Decent Wind!
