Winds have turned light and variable and essentially unsailable here on Maui the past several days. Thursday brought the downward trend with some light but sailable winds at Hookipa. Friday and Saturday winds were less than 10 knots, making surfing and stand-up paddle the ocean activities of choice.
Today we have light southerly winds everywhere. Not looking like it will be a windsurfing day today on Maui either. And the windsurfing forecast doesn’t look good for the next few days either. There’s a cold front and shear line setting up to march across the islands starting with Kauai to our northwest and moving down the island chain. Our best chance for wind will come after the the shear line passes, but the forecast is calling for the shear line to stall over Maui around Wednesday. If you’re on Maui for your spring windsurfing vacation you might as well plan some alternate activities on Monday and Tuesday. After that, go get the biggest gear you can find from the shops and hope the wind comes up enough to sail.
