Solid, sunny, trade wind weather finally returned to Maui yesterday and looks to hang around for at least a few more days. It’s been kind of a hit and miss month so far, as March often is on Maui, with weather patterns transitioning from winter storms to more stable high pressure driving our beloved trade winds.
Wednesday was a gorgeous day with marginal winds – great conditions if you had big enough gear, but a little light for the average guy with sub-6.0 gear. Thursday got windy for a bit, before the rain once again descended on us and squelched until late in the afternoon. Friday dawned with clear, blue, sunny skies and the promise of stronger trade winds. Upon arrival at Kanaha I found lots of people out on the water and onshore breeze with a small north swell still producing some small waves at both Uppers and Lowers. Looked 5.3 to me, but since it was so onshore I rigged a 5.7 to be safe. Plenty of power and with 20 minutes I was wishing I had the 5.3. Came in for the 85 Da Curve since to take better advantage of the fun waist- to should-high waves at Uppers. Some really fun sets at times with some rides with 5 or 6 turns per wave. By 3:00 the wind had kicked in to the 5.0 range and the 5.7 was getting to be a handful.
This morning is looking like a carbon copy of yesterday morning except its’ already blowing 25 at Kanaha at 8:00am. Waves will probably be a little smaller today, but it should be another great day to get out on the water.
