Cool, gray, windy weather and big, short period surf continues here on Maui. I stopped by Kanaha yesterday afternoon. I was amazed at how crowded the Lowers parking lot. I guess conditions at Hookipa are still pretty trashy so a lot of Hookipa regulars are at Kanaha. Surf at Lowers looked head- to logo-high. Skies were gray and squally, wind was blowing in the 4.7 to 5.0 range for average guys. Lots of people out at Lowers and several at Uppers. Since it temps were only in the low 70s and I’m still recovering from a cold, I opted not to sail. Got mixed reviews from some people. Some called the conditions “horrible” while others said it wasn’t as bad as it looked and they had fun.
Similar conditions today. I told myself that unless the temperature at Kanaha was 75 degrees or warmer that I wouldn’t bother. By 1:00 the temperature was still only 73 degrees, with gray skies and some squalls showing up on radar and satellite. So, I played the “I’m sick and I’m a Maui windsurfing snob” card and opted to save it for better conditions. Got a report from Pete that he sailed 5.0 around 1:00 and actually had some pretty good fun on the outer reef at Uppers with some big sets.
When will Maui weather get back to normal? From what I can tell, looks like unsettled weather may be with us for a bit longer.
